Three teenage girls from the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro achieve what few adults dare to attempt: they transform their own lives, their community, and the world around them. With little money in their pockets and big dreams in their minds, the three friends embark on a journey of self-discovery and unity, sparked by the impact of menstruation on their lives. Unable to afford sanitary pads every month, the girls become aware of the consequences of period poverty in their daily routines and in the lives of the women in their community. They find strength in coming together when they start playing on a local girls’ soccer team. Driven by their personal struggles, Amora, Karen, and Irene end up fighting for a common cause: to ensure that the government provides free sanitary pads to all women in need. With the support of many other women, they succeed in winning this battle. Based on a true story, Apenas 3 Meninas is an inspiring film, especially for young women, and deeply in tune with its time.
