Born free, Luiz Gama was sold as a slave by his own father when he was still a child. He suffered all the horrors of slavery in his own skin (for instance, with only eight years old Luiz Gama had to walk for more than 170 km, from the port of Santos to Campinas, with chains on his feet all the way). Yet, he managed to learn how to read and write, and was able to became his own lawyer. By using his words, Luis Gama convinced his owner to set him free. He then turned into a great a lawyer, journalist and poet, dedicating all his time and knowledge to fight for the freedom of others like him, putting his own family and life at risk. In the nineteenth century, this man became one of the most famous and respected lawyers of his time, an abolitionist and a Republican who inspired an entire country. His life is a journey full of drama and adventure, showing a real hero. A universal example of force and devotion to a cause.
